Common History


Linde and BOC have become The Linde Group. Both companies have more than 100 year of history and strong track records as innovators.

1879 Foundation of Gesellschaft für Linde's Eismaschinen AG in Wiesbaden, Germany

1880 Arthur and Leon Brin take out the first of their patents on a process for separating oxygen ( barium oxide process)

1885 Foundation of Linde British Refrigeration Co. in Londo, Linde's first non-German company

1886 Foundation of Brin's Oxygen Company Ltd.

1895 Granting of patent to Carl von Linde for the "process of liquefying atmospheric air or other gases"

1906 Patent for air separation and the construction of the first air separator allowing oxygen purity of up to 97 percent

1906 Linde and Brin's Oxygen Co. agree to use Linde's patents. Linde becomes shareholder in Brin's. Carl von Linde joins the board, Brin's changes name to The British Oxygen Company Ltd.

1907 Foundtation of the Linde Air Products Co., USA

1914 BOC operates high purity gas plants in six major British cities

1929 Linde take over of Güldner-Motoren-Gesellschaft (Diesel engines and tractors)

1935 BOC buys controlling stake in African Oxygen, South Africa, becoming the leading gas company in Africa, now called AFROX

1946 BOC opens research facility in New Jersey (USA)

1954 Foundation of Linde-BOC joint venture BOL Ltd. coordinating the technical design and sales of air separation plants

1959 Linde begins volume production of hydraulic units and froklifts

1965 Discovery of oil and gas under North Sea trigegers strong demand for large vessels, storage tanks and pipelines, boosting BOC sales

1969 Foundation of Linde-BOC joint venture in refrigeration solutions

1980s BOC enters Chinese market

1978 BOC doubles its size upon completing the aquisition of Airco in the USA

1990 Construction of Linde's largest gas production plant at Leuna, Germany

1991 Linde expands gas business in Eastern Europe with the purchase of leading Czech gas company, Technoplyn

1994 25th anniversary of BOC distribution unit's partnership with Marks & Spencer

2000 Construction of world's largest nitrogen plant to pump heavy crude oil under high pressure in the Cantarell Oil fields, Mexico - an innovative joint project involiving Linde, BOC and partners.
Europan Commision approves Linde takeover of Swedish gas company AGA/Statoil places order with Linde for Europe's largest LNG plant (operational from 2007)

2002 Foundation of US engineering joint venture Linde-BOC-Process Plants LLC, Tulsa, Ohio

2004 Linde 125th anniversary/Sale of Linde refrigeration business to Carrier Corp.

2005 Linde International Hydrogeny Day

2006 Linde and BOC join forces to become The Linde Group
